No one knows my name. I don’t share the bus with sophomores and grad students. There is no Krispy Kreme. There is no cheesecake factory. There is no two hour drive to Virginia Beach. There is no Dalynn, no Ayasha, no Barbie, no Kristin.
The city can’t be explored on a bike. I don’t make chai every morning. My room is neat and decorated. I have candles matching my shower curtains. Socializing involves dinnering with ONE friend. I subscribed to Netflix. I live on my couch. Television keeps me company. I finally use my organizer.
I don’t have Indian neighbors. I can’t smell biryani in the apartment lobby. I don’t have any plans for Diwali. I don’t go up to Latte drinkers in Starbucks and chat about the weather.
I shop at Meijers and drink Tropicana juice and talk about Yoga. I drive. A lot. I have time to watch HBO. I have time to catch up on my readings. I have a lot of spare time.
Richmond is rainbow. Detroit is the rain.
Richmond is music. Detroit is silence.
Richmond is love. Detroit is life.
Richmond is friendships. Detroit is strangers.
Richmond is home. Detroit isn’t.

Hi Manasi,
No Krispy Kreme? Come and live in Melbourne.
Thanks for dropping in to read my blog – I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers
David
I could not agree with you anymore, It has been 9 months since I am in West Palm Beach, FL and Richmond is still HOME! At the same time, who would agree more than you Mansi that it is the “PEOPLE” who make home and not the “PLACE”! If I were to move back to Richmond now, having no friends, having none of you guys, it would only feel strange and not home!
